My internet "research" on my ankle

I know sis and I have mentioned in previous blogs that I am dealing with an left ankle injury. I think my sister, husband, and mom are tired of hearing about it, so it is yalls turn!

I have anterior ankle pain. Get ready I almost have a medical degree after all of my research. I will explain words that are new to me. Anterior means inner. So my ankle is achey on the inside. I don't think it is a stress fracture because on long runs at water breaks, I can rotate my ankle about 20 times and when I start running again, I have no pain for about 5 minutes. I know with stress fractures you are supposed to do cross training to reduce impact. Cross training doesn't feel much better on my ankle. Therefore I have concluded I have Posterior Tibialis tendinitis. Here is the definition:

Posterior Tibialis tendinitis is a common overuse condition characterized by medial ankle pain. It is often caused by forceful eversion of the ankle/foot as seen in repetitive kicking in soccer or in runners with hypermobility of the ankle or overpronation of the foot. It is necessary to decrease the inflammation of the tendon to allow pain free return to activity.

This is what I have been doing for treatment:

1. I ice the area once a day for at least 30 minutes
2. I rub generic brand Vick's vapor rub on it in the morning, and put my sock on over top. (Read the package, it says for muscle aches!)
3. I started wearing an ankle brace. (This really helps my ankle feel secure and is the Compression part of R.I.C.E)
4. I use hot patches at night occasionally. I don't know if this does anything but it feels pretty good.
5. I use Icy/Hot patches at night occasionally too. I just like the way this feels too.

I ran yesterday afternoon in Marietta, OH after work. I have reduced my mileage, and have just been doing long runs, and cross training the rest of the days. I decided yesterday to do a 5 mile out and back run. The first 2.5 miles, my ankle didn't hurt at all. It was when I turned around to head back that is got that achey feeling. It never hurts bad enough to make me quit running, but it is on my mind. I wish I had a cool picture to post but you can't even see anything! If you want to send me flowers, cards, and left over Easter candy for my pain and suffering, I think it might make me feel better.

FYI, my hotel in Marietta has a Starbucks INSIDE it. Is it bad that I get off the elevator and they already start making my drink, charge it to my room, and just hand my Caffe Americano to me? Yep, the only words I mutter are "Thank You." Life isn't always bad when you are traveling for work. :)

If you do overpronate you can get orthotics that might help - if you don't already have them. It's probably close to too late to get them before the Pig, but they last for several years. I got my most recent pair from Dr. Osborne.

Ask for Dr. Stiene. You may also want to add some anti-inflammatories. It sounds like a tendon issue.

How many miles do you have on your shoes? Are they dead? You might want to get a 2nd pair and rotate them in on runs. Wearing different shoes will give your ankles a different feel and help prevent over-use injuries (tendentious).

Stretch you calves… a lot, with both a bent knee and a strait knee. Get someone to rub your calves. Suck it up; you’re training for a marathon. Use the taper to recover; you’ll be fine on race day.

Thanks for the advice guys. One of my bad habits is probably not stretching properly (or at all sometimes). I might ask that during some of our group runs if someone will lead us in stretching which I believe you are supposed to do AFTER running. My shoes are fairly new, and the second pair I have had of the same kind. 25 days to race day!

Hey Amber-

Your definition mentioned over-pronation. You need to make sure you have shoes that correct for that (The Running Spot can help determine the shoes you need). If your shoes are not supporting you properly, it can cause all sorts of problems. I don't know about the Vick's - I think it just smells bad to make you think it's working.

I was also laughing at the washing of the GU pack and ipod...until I went to get my running clothes out of the wash and found Kleanex everywhere!
