Thank You Jim Urbaitis

Another week has come and gone. I apologize for my blog frequency slowing down. I was told that my blog is similar to my marathons. At most marathons I start out overly ambitious. In the first few miles I take off like I'm going to win the thing only to slow down at the end.

With the blog, I started out writing three or four a week. I had lots of ideas and was ready to write one after the other. At about the half way point I slowed down to a consistent two per week. It's now getting close the end and I've hit the wall. I'm now writing about one per week and it's not easy. Like the last few miles of the marathon when I question whether I'll be able to finish, I have run out of ideas and question whether I can finish the blog.

I will finish. The quantity and quality may not be what it was early on, but I will complete what I started. I will limp to the finish line.

Last week's training was good. We combined hills and track for our speed workout. We started out downtown and ran up Vine Street. It was straight up hill until we reached UC's campus. We did a track work out then went back down the hill. It was a humbling experience at UC. UC's track team was running at the same time we were. Those kids were flying.

The tempo run was bumped up to three 5K repeats.

The long run was Saturday morning at Lunken. I've run at Lunken many times and you would think that I would like running there. It's a five mile flat loop, there's always a lot of people there, and I stop after every loop for water and/or gels. But I just don't. I think that it's a mental thing. I think that the weather has been bad every time I've ever been there. Not this time.

The weather was fine Saturday and we were scheduled for four loops - twenty miles. The rest of the group started at 6:45. I wasn't able to get there until 8:00, so I met them after they had finished two loops. Knowing that I was going to have to run the last to loops alone, I called on my friend Jim Urbaitis to join me. Jim was a regular to our group last year. He is getting married this spring and hasn't been able to run as much.

Jim knew he would struggle to do ten miles, but he still agreed to help me out. He showed up at 9:15 and finished the run with me. I really appreciate him being there. I don't know if I would have been able to get through the run without him. Thanks again, Jim.

I felt much better this week. My pace for the Pig has to be under 7:30 per mile. I averaged that this week. Unlike last week, I felt as if I could have done a few more miles at that pace. The fastest two miles of the run were miles 19 and 20. I ran the them in 7:15 and 7:20.

Things are coming together.

Up next, The Heart Mini Marathon. I hope to see many of you there. The weather is supposed to be good. Give me shout when we pass each other on Columbia Parkway, the encouragement always helps.
