I Miss My Old Friend

Each year when race seasons rolls around I decide to shed a few pounds to get to what I consider to be my race weight. I feel the best when I'm between 165 and 170 pounds for the race.

I got on the scale on January 1st and weighed in at 184 pounds. It was the most I've weighed since I got serious about running. At that time I weighed about 210. I was discouraged and I questioned whether I would be able to drop the fifteen I needed to get down to my race weight.

Anyone that knows me knows that I am a Mountain Dew junkie. My name is Lance and I am a Dew-a-holic. At one time I was drinking over a two liter every day. I would drink a super sized cup each morning to start the day. Lunch would consist of two twelve ounce cans. I would have another mid afternoon and at least one more in the evening. I justified my addiction because of the caffeine. It helped me wake up in the morning and gave me the boost I needed in the afternoon.

Looking at the scale on January 1st I realized that drastic times would call for drastic measures. I decided to give up the Dews. I had about a six pack left in the fridge and finished those off on January 3rd. I know I could have started my resolution on the first by pouring out the remaining six, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Since then I have been clean. Well almost, I went to Gatlinburg in January and fell off the wagon. I think I had three that weekend. Not too bad and I've not had one since. I'm not going to lie, I miss the Dew.

I had heard that giving up soft drinks was the fastest way to drop some weight. I put that theory to the test and I have to tell you that it worked for me. I weigh myself once a week and at the last weigh in I tipped the scales at 172 pounds. I've lost twelve pounds in a little over ten weeks. I would still like to lose a few more. I think getting to 168 by the Pig is realistic.

Will I stay Dew-free after the race? I doubt it. I feel comfortable when my non race weight hovers around 175. I'll try to limit my intake to around two cans a day. I think it's OK to have guilty pleasures and Mountain Dew is one of mine. Only 58 days, 9 hours, 40 minutes, and 38 seconds until the Pig - until then I guess I'll have another bottled water.

Hi Lance!

This is Amber one of the twins blogging. I too used to have an obsession with soda, but mine was the diet kind. I used to drink 4 24oz bottles of diet soda a day! There would be days when I drank no water and only soda. My new year's resolution was to reduce my soda intake to 1/week. What a drastic change! It was hard at first, my mouth would water just thinking about a diet dr. pepper, but I can't tell you how much better I feel. My digestive system works better when I put water in instead of soda. I have found other things to drink that might help. Ocean Spray makes a Diet Cranberry juice that is FANTASTIC. I consider it a highly flavored water. I also like the Crystal Light packets you add to bottles to give it a little of flavor as opposed to just plain water. I am proud of you for making a committment to your health by giving up your dew. Happy running, I just love reading about how the elite train! :)

This post reminds me of my college and first-job days, when I'd drink up to five bottles of Mt. Dew a day. (Along with about five Cow Tales, but anyway.)

I finally had to stop because it started to give me back aches. I think my kidneys were shutting down.

Just thought I'd share! :)
