That is SOOOO exciting...
Who the F wouldn't be happy!
Ha Ha City of Cincinnati. How's that Banks project coming?
Silly Rest,
It was never going to be in the city - the store needs acres and acres of land bordering a major highway. What were they supposed to do - tear down the Jim Beam plant? Heaven forbid!
See here for an explanation of how Ikea chooses its locations - almost never IN a city, but just outside.
Kelly -
IKEA's store in Atlanta is in the city, part of a project to redevelop an old steel mill site. The store needs a large space, but that doesn't mean it has to be out in the burbs.
Kelly, I know it was not going to be in the city, but Hamilton County was jockeying hard to get it in their jurisdiction. I heard they had their ED people working on it.
They do have the occasional inner city locale, but it's very few and far between. I'd say prolly 80% of them are pure suburban in the US. They need large psace, large parking and easy access in and out.
Personally I wouldn't mind them taking down half of downtown for a space, but I'm not a downtown cinci fan at all. I can't stand to go downtown. Ikea's traffic alone would cripple a already handicapped city center with horrid traffic problems. Easy on and easy off highway access doens't exist in downtown Cinci. (I find once you get off you have to drive about 10 miles to get BACK to the highway, and the signs ony point you southbound even if northbound access exists.
Union center reminds me so much of young still largely undeveloped Schaumburg, where the Ikea I shopped at until this news.
Cincinnati metro will easily still reap some of the benefits. this is a boon for the region, if not the "city".
Even Chicago's is in the NW...in Shumburg. Even if the Banks were done, it would still probably be in West Chester. I would like to see the Banks done, but until then, I'm having way too much fun in Newport, Covington, Mt. Adams, Mt. Lookout, Hyde Park...
Now if only we could somehow rid this town of all the rednecks, it would be a great place to live!
